Jeddah's Landmarks/Monuments Field Trip Class C303

This week in class we were covering the topic landmarks and monuments. So I decided to have a field trip linked to this in Jeddah using social media. I began by dividing the class up into 4 groups of 3. I had to take certain aspects into consideration when forming these groups as these were required for the efficiency of the field trip:-

Some students weren’t from Jeddah so they didn’t know Jeddah very well, couple of students didn’t have a car and also 2/3 students didn’t have any mobile data. So I insured that all the groups were evenly balanced.

The aim of the field trip was for students to find specific landmarks/monuments whilst we were using English as the main language and social media as the main tool of communication, they were also using their reading and writing skills to answer questions.

I started by first making 4 individual What’s App groups, students were then told to wait in their cars before the first clue was sent out. The same clue was sent to all the groups and they had to solve each clue in order to find the landmark in Jeddah. They were then required to take a selfie and post it on the group (this ensured me that they were all participating). After they had figured the clue out I would then send the second clue and so on…….

While they were on the field trip they also had to answer certain questions regarding each landmark. Finally the group who reached the final location where I was waiting with a prize for the wining group.

The students really enjoyed this field trip as they felt it was a fantastic way of learning/improving their English skills whilst also having fun. I embedded social media as the main tool of this field trip as I felt it complemented it, as social media is the main form of communication these days, especially conversing through What’s App and taking selfie’s. Before the students went out I gave them rules which they should abide by for example not driving fast, the driver should not be using his mobile, respecting people whilst taking pictures etc…..
